Capella Kyoto opened on 22 March 2026 as the brand’s first property in Japan. Set within Kyoto’s historic Miyagawa-chō district – one of the city’s traditional geiko and maiko quarters – the hotel occupies the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School, steps from Kennin-ji Temple and within walking distance of Gion and the Kamo River.

The four-storey, 89-key property is conceived as a contemporary re-interpretation of the traditional machiya townhouse, expressed through a sequence of layered thresholds, narrow passages, and intimate courtyards. Brewin Design Office shaped the interiors as an exploration of material tactility and spatial rhythm – where timber, washi, ceramic and bronze are composed in quiet dialogue, creating rooms that feel restrained, atmospheric, and deeply connected to Kyoto’s culture of craft.

At its core, the hotel is organised around a central courtyard, echoing the tsuboniwa typology, while guest rooms and suites range from compact city rooms to larger accommodations overlooking the restored Miyagawa-chō Kaburenjo Theatre or Kenninji Temple. Select suites incorporate private onsen, extending the experience of ritual and retreat into the private realm. Dining and social spaces are conceived as extensions of this spatial narrative.

The signature restaurant, SoNoMa by SingleThread, anchors the culinary offering alongside additional venues including a kappo-style restaurant, a French brasserie, and a patisserie – each reinforcing the hotel’s dialogue between Kyoto tradition and contemporary interpretation.

Capella Kyoto is not conceived as a singular object, but as a composition of experiences – an architecture of movement, material, and pause – reflecting Kyoto’s enduring culture of subtlety, craftsmanship, and discovery.
