Designed by you knock knock, Studio Ga, ze’s new office articulates a restrained approach to soft brutalism, where clarity of space and controlled material contrast take precedence over overt expression. Created for a video production studio, the workplace is distributed across three levels, each defined by a specific role yet visually linked through openness, vertical voids, and calibrated transparency.
The project is anchored by the interplay between exposed structural elements and finely crafted timber. Concrete columns, beams, and ceiling slabs remain uncovered, giving the interior a sense of permanence and industrial depth. This raw framework is softened by custom woodwork in warm, light-to-reddish hues, applied across wall surfaces, built-in storage, stair components, and partitions to introduce tactility and a more human scale. Generous floor-to-ceiling glazing reinforces the connection to the street and supports visual continuity throughout the building.
The ground floor operates as a shared working and gathering space. A bespoke meeting table establishes the room’s focal point, while integrated cabinetry conceals high-end audio equipment, seamlessly responding to the technical needs of media production. Along the façade, a stainless steel counter defines a compact beverage zone, its crisp surface offset by timber cabinetry. Exposed services, track lighting, and utilitarian finishes underscore the space’s functional character, with discreet branding embedded into a custom TV cabinet that also serves as a spatial divider near the stair.
Moving upward, the interior opens both spatially and atmospherically. A double-height void expands the second-floor volume and draws daylight into the center of the plan. Suspended within this space, a large paper lantern diffuses light, tempering the hardness of concrete and steel. A black metal staircase slices through the interior with graphic precision, while an adjacent lounge furnished with a black leather sectional offers an informal pause, softened by sheer, full-height curtains.
Work areas are structured with custom pegboard partitions, allowing a balance between separation and permeability. Their modular configuration supports the evolving workflows of a production team, keeping tools and materials accessible yet visually controlled. Beneath the stair, a compact pantry continues the same joinery language, forming an efficient coffee nook with minimal footprint.
The top level is dedicated to focused work and oversight. Floor-to-ceiling timber shelving, including storage for a vinyl collection, introduces a personal and cultural dimension to the otherwise pared-back setting. A substantial black desk anchors the space, complemented by carefully selected furnishings that reference mid-century design with a subtle retro-futurist edge.
