Casa Doora is the first of a collection of boutique houses conceived by Woodward&Co, in which each project develops its own identity through a dialogue between art, place and a particular way of living. For this 160 m² renovation in Marbella, the starting point was Dora Maar, the artist and photographer closely connected to Pablo Picasso, whose character and creative freedom inspired the name and atmosphere of the house.
Located just a few metres from the Mediterranean, the project draws from the distinctive spirit of Marbella and the Costa del Sol: its intense light, proximity to the sea and outdoor lifestyle. The interiors reinterpret the glamorous and uninhibited atmosphere of 1960s Marbella, when the city emerged as an international destination, through colour, materiality and a carefully curated mix of contemporary and vintage pieces.
The architectural language is defined by soft, curved geometries that guide movement and create continuity between spaces. A palette of local and natural materials reinforces the Mediterranean character of the house: white mortar walls, terracotta flooring and the characteristic green Marbella tile, used throughout the entrance, kitchen, staircase and bathrooms. Deep greens are combined with sea-inspired blues and warm brown tones.
At the entrance, an unexpected bar island establishes the social character of the house from the first moment. The kitchen, pool, poolhouse and outdoor dining areas are conceived as spaces for gathering, reflecting a relaxed way of living centred around summer, friends and the outdoors.
The furniture combines contemporary design, bespoke pieces and carefully sourced vintage objects, including an Emmanuelle chair and original 1960s ceramic tiles used as an installation behind the sofa.
Casa Doora ultimately seeks to capture the essence of a Mediterranean holiday house: informal, expressive and deeply connected to the cultural memory and atmosphere of Marbella.
